K-grade ductile iron pipes are standard pipes classified according to their wall thickness and are widely used in various engineering fields such as municipal water supply, drainage, heating, and fire protection. The "K" represents the wall thickness coefficient; the higher the number, the thicker the pipe wall, resulting in improved pressure resistance, structural strength, and resistance to external loads, making it suitable for more complex engineering scenarios.

The wall thickness of all K-grade ductile iron pipes follows a unified calculation formula: e=K × (0.5 + 0.001 × DN), where e is the standard wall thickness (mm), DN is the nominal diameter (mm), and K is the wall thickness grade coefficient. This formula is applicable to the entire series of K-grade pipes, with unified calculation logic and strong universality. It can quickly calculate the standard wall thickness corresponding to different nominal diameters, providing a core basis for engineering selection and strength verification. K9 grade pipes are the most widely used in engineering. Simply substitute K=9 into the formula to calculate the standard wall thickness for the corresponding nominal diameter. This is the mainstream selection reference in municipal engineering.

Many users easily fall into the misconception that "the thicker the wall, the better the corrosion resistance." In fact, there is no direct correlation between the two. The corrosion resistance of pipelines is primarily determined by their internal and external anti-corrosion coatings. Commonly used coatings include internal cement lining and external zinc coating with asphalt paint, which effectively resist soil erosion and water corrosion, extending the pipeline's service life. Wall thickness, however, only affects the pipeline's structural strength and pressure-bearing capacity, and is unrelated to its corrosion resistance. Therefore, when selecting a pipeline, the anti-corrosion coating and wall thickness must be considered separately, taking into account the installation environment to determine a suitable corrosion protection solution that balances safety and economy.

Within the full range of K-grade ductile iron pipes, the K9 grade serves as the core selection benchmark for engineering projects, suitable for the vast majority of applications.

Prioritize K9 Grade

For most municipal engineering projects (such as conventional water supply, drainage, and heating systems), K9 pipes offer the optimal overall cost-performance ratio and widest application scope. This is due to their balanced structural strength, stable pressure-bearing capacity, and reliability compliant with national standards.

If the design pressure exceeds 1.6MPa, or if extremely high demands exist for pipe rigidity and resistance to external loads (e.g., traversing complex geology or high-pressure transmission scenarios), K10 or K12 grades may be selected. Conversely, for low-pressure applications (e.g., internal low-pressure water supply, small-scale irrigation), K8 or K7 grades may be selected to control project costs. However, note that these grades are non-standard products. Strict verification of product quality and performance consistency is required to avoid compromising project safety.
